Ke’li Coleman can describe in one word what City Mission means to her family and their Brightmoor neighborhood…..COMMUNITY!
“City Mission kind of reminds me of when I was growing up with my grand parents and you had a community,” she said. “The whole neighborhood got involved with the kids and how they are supposed to be raised. I like that feeling.”
It’s not just her children that have benefited from City Mission, but the 12-year Brightmoor resident said northwest Detroit is a better place because of City Mission’s outreach programs to the community.
“I think it’s great that they really care about the area. They are not just here to take pictures or anything, but they are here to actually help,” she said. “People, at their lowest point, can come and get help and that keeps crime down because they are not committing crimes to get the things they basically need, like food and clothing.”
Ke’li was introduced to City Mission, two years ago, when her mother started taking her daughters to the tutoring program. The girl’s school grades improved so much that, when there were openings in City Mission Academy, Ke’li wasted no time enrolling all three of them. Her daughters, Dejiza, McKayla and Quianna, now attend City Mission Academy and her son, DeJuan, attends the after school mentoring program.
“My girls are a lot happier in school and my son is getting some guidance through the mentoring program,” she said. “I want them to be excited about going to school and I want them to be excited about the neighborhood they live in. I don’t want them to feel bad because of the neighborhood they live in and they don’t because they figure, we have a good school,” she said.
In addition to her children’s academic growth and development, City Mission is helping Ke’li develop her skills. She began this month as a part-time receptionist in the business office and is keeping her interview skills and resume up to date through City Mission’s Family Independence Planning program.
“I can help myself prepare for the next position or I can pass the help on to someone else,” she said.
Thank you for helping us make Brightmoor a better community for the Coleman family and the other 800 families in our neighborhood.
