“When I come in City Mission, I know I’m in God’s love,” said Brightmoor resident Delores Green. “I know that God dwells here, I know that His love dwells here and I feel safe here,” she said. Delores has come a long way from what she first thought about City Mission 10 years ago.
Her family moved to the community the year her daughter was born. She remembers hearing about City Mission’s tutoring program and admits she wasn’t sure she wanted her child to attend.
“I had never heard of people doing something like that,” she said. “People of a different race coming down into the city and just saying, ‘we want to help your children.’”
At the time, her child was too young to attend, but Delores’ sister decided to send her elementary age children.
“They enjoyed every minute of it,” Delores said. “They went every week and they were so excited about it, it changed my mind,” she said.
Delores enrolled her daughter, Dejanae, into the tutoring program, right on cue, when she turned 5 years old. That was five years ago. Now, three of her children are enrolled in City Mission Academy and the other two will enroll as soon as they are old enough.
“Because of the love,” she said. “The people I love are here and I know they love me and they love my children, without a doubt.”
