Thanksgiving always comes early at City Mission.
“Thank you all for this, we need it,” said new Brightmoor resident JoAnn. She moved into the community Friday with her three sons.
Through your generosity, and with the help of 70 volunteers, last Saturday we distributed 268 boxes of food to Brightmoor children and families in need.
“Thank you for coming out and sharing Christ’s love,” City Mission’s executive director Nicole Aikens said to the volunteers. “We are taking his love to people in the community.”
Each box of food contained chicken legs or turkey, potatoes, apples, milk, eggs, butter, a loaf of bread, a box of macaroni and cheese, and peanut butter and jelly. Volunteers arrived at 9:30 am to receive instructions, unload the food items, assemble the boxes and take them out to the people.
Deb Foy, of Oak Point Church, made it a family affair. She delivered six boxes of food with the help of her two young children and her 61-year old mother.
“I want to serve others,” she said. “Life’s all about giving back to people in need.”
Her mother, Linda, was in town for a visit and decided to join in on the service project.
“Deb told me they were coming down here, so I wanted to come,” she said.
Outside the skies were cold and gray, but warmth and gratitude were shared from each home that opened its doors to receive. “I appreciate this a whole lot,” said community resident Jonathan, with his toddler daughter.”
Long after all the boxes were passed out and the volunteers and staff had gone home, residents continued calling the City Mission office and leaving thank you messages on the voice mail. One family handed the volunteers a card on their way out, after leaving the box of groceries.
They wrote: “Thank you for all you done for me and my family. We wish you and your family a happy, loving year, from the heart. God Bless you. Keep up the good work.”
We pass this Thanksgiving Message on to our partners, volunteers and supporters:
Thank you and keep up the good work.
